Kicking Goals Program

A partnership program between Newman SHS, V Swans, West Coast Eagles Football Club (WCE), Swan Districts Football Club (SDFC), BHP Billition Iron Ore and the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

This award winning program is a curriculum-based initiative that utilises a reward and incentive system, where students are required to maintain high levels of attendance and behaviour to remain in the program.

V Swans – who they are

The community development division of the Swan Districts Football Club (SDFC) is referred to as V Swans. The V Swans staff deliver programs to primary and high school students who are predominately located in the Pilbara region of WA.

Applying the V Swans Active Education framework across all their community programs, this framework includes transferring skills from the sporting field to the classroom to achieve educational outcomes and improve the health and well-being of students.

V Swans and BHP Billiton partnership

The SDFC and V Swans has shared a long and productive partnership with BHP Billiton to deliver a range of community educational programs to  Newman Senior High School.

The program is designed to encourage school attendance and engagement, develop individual self esteem, demonstrate the importance of goals and aspiration, explore the notions of team work and leadership, demonstrate the importance of health and wellbeing and enable students to contribute back to their local community.

The program not only achieves these outcomes, it also places a strong focus on a comprehensive four hour a week AFL curriculum linked to the Health and Physical Education Learning Outcomes. This allows students to be extended in the physical, technical, tactical and mental components of the sport. Participants in the program are encouraged to apply their acquired skills within the community, benefiting local sporting organisations with qualified coaches, umpires, trainers and administrators.
