About Newman SHS

Newman Senior High School is located in the mining town of Newman 1200km North of Perth and is part of the Pilbara region. The school benefits from a diverse student and staff population. The community promotes cultural acceptance of peoples from diverse backgrounds, enriching the school community. The school has strong partnerships with BHP Billiton and other local businesses which support many of the schools programs to enhance and enrich student learning. BHP sponsors programs such as the Mining Alliance Program which is unique to Newman SHS. Students have the opportunity for academic extension and trade preparation through the provision of mining and related learning experiences both at school and on site.

The school has very strong Vocational Education Training (VET) programs supported by many local businesses. These facilitate the transition from school to employment or further education. Many students involved gain employment as a result of on-the-job training. All VET students are enrolled in certificate courses. A select group of students from Years 9 - 12 participate in the UWA ASPIRE program, which is designed to provide support and mentoring for students considering University entrance. This program also provides distinct advantages for country students wishing to gain entry to the University of WA. Our partnership with the Pilbara Shire ensures students have access to a well appointed Gym and Performing Arts Centre.
